What is fade and draw?

Fade and draw are controlled effects on golf strokes. In the case of the fade, the ball begins its trajectory to the left of the target and ends approaching it from the right (for right-handed golfers). Instead, the draw follows the opposite path: it starts to the right and goes back to the left.

If the effects are too pronounced, the fade can become a slice and the draw a hook, which can compromise the accuracy of the shot.

How to run a draw hit

The draw is characterized by a path from right to left with a lower height and greater rolling when landing. To execute it correctly:

Stronger grip: Turn both hands to the right on the grip. You should be able to see at least two knuckles on your left hand and the right hand should be in a lower position.
Ball position: Place the ball slightly further back on the stance (about an inch from neutral). This helps to close the shoulders and facilitate an inside-out punch.
Alignment and posture: Position your feet, hips and shoulders slightly to the right of the target.
Inside-out swing: When performing the swing, imagine a trajectory from the inside to the outside, ensuring an impact that favors the right-to-left effect.

Bonus tip

Practice first with intermediate irons (like a 5 or 6) before trying to draw with woods, as they generate a greater side effect.

How to run a fade stroke

The fade offers a higher and more controlled flight, with a shorter rolling distance. It is ideal for approach shots or to avoid obstacles on the left. To perform a fade correctly:

Weaker grip: Slightly rotates both hands to the left. The right hand should be more on the stick and the nails of this hand should not be seen.
Ball position: Place the ball later in the stance, just in front of your left shoulder (for right-handed golfers). This favors an impact with the face of the stick more open.
Alignment and posture: Slightly open the posture by aligning feet, hips and shoulders to the left of the target.
Swing from outside to inside: Imagine a crossstroke, where the stick follows a 5-11 path in the clockwise direction (for right-handed players). The key is to slightly delay the release of the stick.

Bonus tip

If you play against the wind, remember that the fade tends to lose more distance than the draw, so you may need to use a longer stick.

When to use fade and draw

Fade and draw are not just tools to show off in the field, but can make a difference in strategic situations:

Use the draw when...
- You need to avoid an obstacle on the right.
- You want to increase the distance on dry ground.
- Play against the wind, as the ball will have less height and more rolling.
Use the fade when...
- You want a more accurate approach with less rolling.
- You need to fly over an obstacle with a higher blow.
- You are on a dogleg (curve on the fairway) from left to right.
